Beverley Food Festival and East Yorkshire Local Food Network Awards launched at Bishop Burton

Two leading awards schemes have come together to promote the best of East Yorkshire’s local food and drink industry for the second year.

Beverley Town Council’s Food Festival’s food awards, which started ten years ago, combined with the East Yorkshire Local Food Network (EYLFN) awards for the first time last year to create a bumper awards with 19 categories that were launched at the East Yorkshire Local Food Network Spring Conference at Bishop Burton recently.

.

The initiative is a collaboration between Beverley Town Council, East Riding Council and East Yorkshire Local Food Network and is being organised by Helen Watson, Rob Farnsworth, Ed Sweeting, Jessica Sellers, Julian Wild and Mark Farnsworth.

Nominations for the awards, which close on 31st July, are invited from any business with a presence at the 2015 Beverley Food Festival and from any member of the East Yorkshire Local Food Network.  David Nowell, executive chef at Tickton Grange, is the chair of judges that include local food lovers.

Of the initiative, EYLFN Board Member Mark Farnsworth from William’s Farm Kitchen, said: “The EYLFN is delighted to partner with Beverley Town Council for the second year of a joint awards scheme that celebrates the best of Yorkshire’s food and drink producers, retailers and hospitality outlets.

The Food Festival itself is a real highlight in the East Yorkshire food and drink calendar and this year, with the awards being presented two weeks before the festival, visitors to the festival will have the opportunity to celebrate the very best East Yorkshire food and drink with us”.

Entry to the awards is free, but requires the completion of a form that is available to download from http://enjoy-eastyorks-food.co.uk/food-awards/ and should be returned to East Yorkshire Local Food Network, PO Box 283, York YO42 9AS or e mailed to info@enjoy-eastyorks-food.co.uk

The winners will be announced at a networking evening at Tickton Grange on 22nd September.

Beverley Town Council established the Food Festival in 2006, initially with 35 stalls in the Market Place with a small Food Theatre featuring local chefs.   The event has grown from strength to strength over the past ten years and now attracts around 20,000 visitors to a full Market Place of 100 local food stalls and 15 local chefs cooking and demonstrating locally grown or reared food in the 250 seater Food Theatre. In addition to the food, there is family entertainment, music and dancing.  Resident chefs at the Food Festival include David Nowell (Beverley Tickton Grange), James Mackenzie (The Pipe and Glass), Ben Cox (The Star), John White, (Whites of Beverley), Matthew Barker (The Westwood), Tina Cerutti (Cerutti 2), Thierry Condette (TC Patisserie) and Jason Rowe (Rebels Smokehouse).  The Beverley Food Festival works in partnership with other organisations like the Beverley Beer Festival who organise a beer festival that complements the foodie weekend offer in Beverley.  The Beverley Folk Festival provides some of the music, and other organisations support to promote the best of Beverley.

Established in 2010, The East Yorkshire Local Food Network champions the wide range of delicious food and drink available in and around East Yorkshire for the benefit of local food and drink businesses and communities and currently has 115 members.  The network has support from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council rural team. The network welcomes applications from small or medium-sized food and drink related business or organisation in East Yorkshire or within 30 miles of the boundary.  For more information, please visit http://enjoy-eastyorks-food.co.uk/ or email info@enjoy-eastyorks-food.co.uk.
