Join the Big Help Out – The King’s Community Celebration (updated 20/04/23
Beverley Town Council and Beverley Minster are working in partnership to organise an afternoon of community-spirited entertainment to mark the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.
Taking place on Bank Holiday Monday 8th May 2023, the event will be an opportunity for community groups to promote their activities and encourage new volunteers, all within the spirit of the national “Big Help Out” initiative being led by His Majesty. There will also be performances by a range of local music groups, refreshments and the opportunity to bring and enjoy a picnic within a historic setting.
Starting at 12noon and running until 5pm, everything will take place at Beverley Minster, with the grounds surrounding the church acting as a community picnic venue for the day. Music will take place inside the Minster and a range of voluntary groups will have stalls to promote their good work.
The planned schedule of music is as follows:
- 1:00pm to 2:30pm – East Riding Youth Orchestra and Wind Band
- 2:45pm to 3:15pm – Beverley Town Handbell Ringers
- 3:15pm to 3:45pm – Beverley Male Voice Choir
- 3:45pm to 4:15pm – Beverley Ukelele Group
- 4:15pm to 5:00pm – Beverley Church Lads’ and Girls’ Brigade (CLGB)
Beverley Town Council said: “We want this to be an occasion full of true community spirit, which all of these talented groups will bring to the event. From long-standing local treasures like the Handbell Ringers and Male Voice Choir, through to the infectious enthusiasm of the Ukulele Group and young musicians from the Youth Orchestra and CLGB, we hope it will be a relaxed and informal afternoon, with residents and visitors able can come and go as they please.”
The team at Beverley Minster are only too happy to be working with the Town Council on this unique event. In a statement they said: “Beverley Minster always strives to be at the heart of the community, not just for members of the congregation, but for the town as a whole. With the hope of good weather, it will be wonderful to see families and residents picnicking in the grounds of the Minster, with plenty more space inside for music and socialising. We are delighted to be working with Beverley Town Council on this project and believe it is a fitting way to not just mark the crowning of a new monarch, but to also celebrate the community of Beverley.”
Everyone attending the event is welcome to bring a picnic to eat either inside the Minster or within surrounding grounds. In addition, there will also be the opportunity to pre-order or purchase food on site. Whilst the Minster will be serving cakes and drinks, Cole’s Kitchen of Beverley will also be selling a variety of special picnic boxes. These include:

- The Prince of Wales’ Ploughman’s Box – £8.50: Pork Pie & Pickle ~ Pork & Stuffing Roll ~ Mature Cheddar ~ Wensleydale with Cranberry ~ Smoked Cheese Carved Ham ~ Crusty Bread ~ Crisps
- Prince George’s Lunch Box – £5.00: Ham & Cheese Sandwiches ~ Sausage Roll ~ Crisps ~ Fruit ~ Choc Chip Cookie ~ Royal Cupcake
These boxes are available to pre-order now via the Cole’s Kitchen Facebook page or by visiting the café on North Bar Within, with payment required in full to confirm your order, payable via BACS and Paypal or cash and card in the café itself – you can then collect your order from their stall at the Minster on the day. Cole’s will also have a very limited number of boxes to purchase at the event, but it is highly recommended you pre-order, so you don’t miss out. In addition, there will also be an additional selection of savoury snacks and cold drinks available to purchase at the event itself.
Doors open at 12noon on Bank Holiday Monday 8th May 2023 and there will be a wide range of local community groups promoting their activities and encouraging new volunteers, all within the spirit of the national “Big Help Out” initiative being led by His Majesty King Charles III.
The King’s Community Celebration is completely free to attend, with people invited to come and go as they wish – you can sit down to watch the performers, wander in and around the Minster whilst listening to the music or simply enjoy a family picnic at a truly remarkable location.
