It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Councillor Peter Astell.
He was first elected to Beverley Town Council in 2003 and was a tireless advocate for his community. Peter was twice selected as Mayor, first in 2011-12 and again in 2015-16, and cared passionately about Beverley, in particular the Cherry Tree and Swinemoor Estate, where he lived and served. He constantly fought for better services for young people, older people and to raise awareness of our town’s industrial heritage.
Peter was well known throughout the region and sat on many committees, all aimed at helping to improve the lives of residents and strengthen the democratic voice of town and parish councils.
In May 2023, he was honoured to be elected to East Riding of Yorkshire Council for the Minster and Woodmansey Ward, which he served until the very end with dedication and enthusiasm.
He was a true one-off who will be greatly missed by all who knew him, including Town Council officers and elected members.
Our thoughts at this time go to his partner Julie and his son Tom, who followed in his father’s footsteps and is the current Mayor of Beverley. We also extend our sympathy to all his family, friends and colleagues.
